Academic Programs for American Indian Students


The academic section of NPTEC facilitates research projects and educational activities among Northern Plains tribal communities, including summer or other student development programs at the University of Nebraska Medical Center, University of North Dakota, and the University of Iowa and assistance for pursuing health careers, through mailings and during relevant meetings such as the AATCHB quarterly board meetings and gatherings of tribal colleges and universities.

UNMC offer several different programs for students including American Indian students for college preparation and allied health careers (www.unmc.edu/alliedhealth) among other things.

Summer High School Student Programs:

Iowa Junior Science and Humanities Symposium - The Junior Science and Humanities Symposium is a research symposium where students get an opportunity to hear their peers present research.  In addition, students and teachers tour cutting-edge research facilities and attend faculty presentations on a variety of topics.

Science, Engineering, Communication, Mathematics Enhancement Program - SECME is a national strategic alliance to renew and strengthen the professional capacity of K-12 educators, motivate and mentor students, and empower parents so that all students can learn and achieve at higher levels.

Iowa First Nations Summer Program - The Iowa First Nations Summer Program is a three-week residential life science program at the University of Iowa that focuses on the environment, the health sciences, and the relationship between science and Native American cultures.

Secondary Student Training Program - In this program, students conduct scientific research under the guidance of a faculty mentor.  Students spend approximately 40 hours per week researching a field of interest to them, culminating in a formal abstract summarizing their 6 weeks of research.

The Life Science Summer Program - This program provides students hands-on laboratory training and classroom instruction covering a wide range of topics in the area of developmental biology.

National Summer Institute in Forensics - A nationally recognized forensics program, this summer institute cutting edge training by some of the most talented teachers and coaches of forensics in the nation.

High School Journalism Workshops - Six different workshops held on the University of Iowa campus, each one focused on a different aspect of journalism and taught by University of Iowa Faculty and local professionals.

Iowa Young Writers' Studio - Join us this summer when young writers from across the country come together to share their work, practice craft, and improve their writing. Find out just how much you can improve your own writing with two weeks of intensive focus.

The CIC/Iowa Summer Research Opportunities Program (SROP) is an award winning program designed to pair promising underrepresented undergraduate students with faculty mentors in order to initiate the students into health research activities within a given discipline.

The Iowa Edge (S | C | A)
The Iowa Edge provides African American, Asian American, Latino/a, Native American, and first-generation college students with an introduction to The University of Iowa.

Microbiology Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship (S | C | A)
Fellowships are available to allow well-qualified applicants to participate in a nine-week program designed for students interested in a career in science. Student participants are integrated into faculty research programs and are encouraged to perform at the level of beginning graduate students.

Summer Research Opportunities Program in Molecular and Cellular Pharmacology (S | C | A)
This 10-week program allows qualified students with an interest in basic science research to conduct a research project in the laboratory of a participating faculty member.

Interdisciplinary Summer Undergraduate Research Program (S | C | A)
This program is designed to allow students to pursue broad research interests in modern biomedical research areas in the laboratories of faculty who belong to the graduate programs in Genetics, Immunology, Molecular Biology, and Neuroscience.
