NPTPP provides a variety of training, technical support, and educational
resources relevant to Northern Plains tribal communities. Services are
designed to strengthen tobacco prevention and control efforts of tribal
health departments, Indian Health Service clinics, community health representative
programs, schools, and other tribally-based organizations.

Tobacco Use Surviellance
NPTPP assists tribes and states conduct the American Indian Adult Tobacco Survey (AI-ATS). The purpose of conducting the AI-ATS is to:
- provide tribal specific estimates against which tribes can compare to national, state, regional, and Healthy People 2010 benchmarks.
- enable tribes to effectively engage in the surveillance and monitoring of attitudes, behaviors, and beliefs related to tobacco use among tribal members, which can be used in the development of tobacco prevention and cessation initiatives that best address the needs of tribal members.
- provide data that will allow tribes to set health priorities and substantiate the need for continued access of tobacco control resources.
- provide data able to inform the development of tribal policies that are aimed to reduce the consumption of tobacco products, and the public’s exposure to environmental tobacco smoke.
